Sally Anderson uses painting to explore intimate personal experience in relation to domesticity, relationships undercurrents, motherhood and memory held in place. She is particularly interested in notions of ‘the souvenir’ and ways experience is held in object and landscape. Anderson’s works deliberately dances between abstraction and representation, gesture and form. She uses still life and landscape as metaphor rather than subject. Stella Rosa McDonald writes ‘her paintings are like wombs or libraries—where gestation and digestion are tacitly implied’.

Born in Lismore, NSW, Sally Anderson commenced her undergraduate studies in Fine Art at Southern Cross University (Lismore) and completed them at UNSW Art & Design (Sydney) in 2014. Since graduated Anderson has held several solo exhibitions in both Sydney and Brisbane. In 2017 she was the recipient of the prestigious Brett Whiteley Travelling Arts Scholarship and in 2018 undertook a three-month artist residency at the Cite in Paris. She has been a finalist in the Paddington Art Prize, Kilgour Prize, Portia Geech Award, Sunshine Coast Art Prize. In 2017 Anderson was artist in residence at the Nancy Fairfax Studio (Tweed Regional Gallery) and in 2014 she was invited to participate in the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists (SIM) artist residency in Reykjavik, Iceland.
